What is Reiki?

The term ‘reiki’ comes from the Japanese word ‘rei’ meaning ‘universal’ or ‘higher power’, and ‘ki,’ which translates to ‘vital life force energy’ that flows through all living things.

‘Reiki’ is a Japanese technique for meditation promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and activating the ‘natural healing ability’ of the body. It is not a religion nor associated with any religious practice; it is based on an Eastern medicine belief that living beings have energy fields that support their health and vitality.

Reiki is a complementary health approach in which practitioners place their hands on or just above different areas of the recipient’s body (in-person or through a long-distance set up), sensing energy blocks and moving the energy for the highest good of the client.

How does Reiki work?

Reiki is a non-invasive gentle technique of treatment that helps the body heal by removing blocks in its energy field, aligning and balancing the body’s chakras (energy centres) and straightening the body’s energy pathways.

Energy blocks impede innate flow of energy through the chakras and can cause various physical, emotional and mental health issues. Reiki is universal life force energy—the practitioner is just a ‘conduit’ for ‘prana’ (life force energy) to flow through the hands of the practitioner into the recipient’s body to activating the natural healing process of the recipient.

What does a typical Reiki session feel like?

The experience of Reiki is subjective: the recipient may experience a feeling heat from the practitioner’s hands, or subtle pulsations throughout the body. Recipients frequently feel a different state of consciousness—sometimes simultaneously aware of their surroundings and in a relaxed, calm state. Some may fall into a deep, sleep-like meditative state.

At the end of a session the practitioner talks with the client about what came up for them during the session. Each client is unique, and so is each healing session! Thus, the practitioner holds space to actively listen to the client’s experience so the have an opportunity to share their emotions or feedback.

What to expect at your first appointment

The first step is a 15-minute pre-consult or intake process in which a brief health history is shared by the client with respect to the ailment or issue they hope to address in their session(s). The Reiki practitioner will give an overview of the treatment session before the Reiki energy begins.

What to expect in a long-distance (online, remote) Reiki session

The client stays in the comfort of their home or any other place of choice which is quiet and relaxing for receiving Reiki energy. The practitioner connects with the client through a virtual set-up and the practitioner works to alleviate any energy blocks and help align and balance the chakras.
